There comes a time in our lives when the elder members of our families require special attention. Unfortunately in most cases we cannot offer them the required care due to various reasons e.g. lack of time, lack of experience, etc. Even so we are determined to offer them the best care we can find and thus come the inevitable question: which is the best senior care aide?

This article is not meant to offer you the perfect solution because such a thing does not exist in this case, it varies depending on what type of care is required, what condition does the patient have, how much money you can afford to spent and many others. This article is designed to help you find the best solution for your very own unique situation.

First of all you have to take in consideration the fact that the caregiver you will hire will become an important part of your elder family member’s life. So you will have to be careful so that the person you will hire, besides all the necessary skills needed to take care of a senior are fulfilled, he should also have good social and communication skills so that a bond of trust can be created between the caregiver and the senior.

Second of all you should ask yourself what is more important for you and your elder family member; to have a caregiver that comes for 15 minutes a day and provides the required medical attention with as little interaction as possible between him and the patient or a caregiver that will spend a couple of hours with the patient in a non formal context in which the social interaction is very good and will help the senior or even you with other tasks as well. It all depends on the condition of the patient, the budget you have allocated for this service and the amount of time you or other family members can spend with your elder family member.

Thirdly, when you are in the process of choosing a caregiver be sure to run a background check on them so that will not end up a couple of months later noticing that certain items from the house have gone missing or who knows what else. In general the agencies who provide caregivers will offer you all the information you need to make a well informed decision. Depending on what state you are living in you might also be able to get a copy of the criminal record of the caregiver you are about to hire. Reviews from past employers are a big plus because they generally reflect the reality. Keep in mind that you should not rely solely on the information you see on paper, never underestimate the power of the face to face interview. There have been many cases when a caregiver candidate seemed perfect on paper but when faced with his potential employer was a total mess and vice versa. All these steps are required if you want to be sure you made the right choice in choosing a certain caregiver.
